A training environment for players to flourish is pivotal for their growth, that’s why creating a "free" culture is essential. This doesn't mean abandoning coaching philosophies, but fostering an environment where players feel free to experiment and fail without fear of judgment or consequences.
If a player tries something new and it doesn't work initially, there's no scolding. We have an open discussion about adjusting the approach together until achieving the desired results. Handing players the answers doesn't facilitate growth.
Building this trust starts with meaningful relationships where players know you care about them as people, not just performance. Give them full ownership while making it clear their voices matter.
Show up authentically every day, helping them reach new heights without setting limits on their abilities. Every coaching point should optimally position them to keep improving.
Sometimes this requires tough conversations - telling a player they're not as good as they think or that their current approach won't work long-term. Other times, you'll have to admit you don't have all the answers but will problem-solve together.
Take the long view. True development is a marathon requiring time, resources, experimentation, failures and successes. It's not a one-season fix.
Players cycle through, but your impact lasts. Will they feel you boxed in their potential? Prioritized your own agenda? Or did everything possible to empower their growth?
You won't be perfect, but strive to bring your best daily. Ditch the rules and relentlessly pursue their development and results, by any means necessary.
