Why Mental Skills Matter

Physical ability may get you on the field, but mental toughness keeps you there. Baseball is a game of failure — how athletes respond to setbacks, pressure, and distractions determines their success.
Our Mental Skills Training program gives athletes the tools to:
Stay confident after failure
Manage stress and emotions effectively
Build pre-game, in-season, and off-season routines
Compete with clarity in high-pressure moments
Develop mental habits that last beyond sport

Andrew McDermott
Mental Performance Coach
Andrew McDermott is the Mental Performance Coach at VeloU and currently serves as a Cognitive Performance Specialist for the U.S. Army. In this role, Andrew works directly with soldiers to develop the cognitive skills required to perform in demanding, high-pressure environments, with an emphasis on focus, decision-making, confidence, and maintaining performance under stress.
Andrew brings that experience to VeloU, helping athletes build practical mental skills that translate directly to preparation and competition. He also spent two seasons as the Mental Performance Coach for the New York Boulders, giving him experience applying these principles within professional baseball.
Andrew earned his Master of Science in Mental Performance from Ithaca College and played four years of Division I baseball at Quinnipiac University and Queens University of Charlotte. His background across military cognitive performance, professional baseball, and his own playing career gives him a unique perspective on preparing athletes for the mental demands of high-level competition.
