D1 Bound: VeloU Athletes Reflect on Their Path to Signing Day

Today marks a major milestone for several of our athletes at VeloU as they commit to Division I colleges to continue their baseball careers. This moment represents the culmination of years of hard work, growth, and the unwavering support of their families, coaches, and teammates. As these athletes take the next step in their journey, we celebrate their accomplishments and reflect on how VeloU has been a key part of their development along the way.

Ben Schulman - University of Virginia

On-Site Athlete for 4+ Years

Ben Schulman has been with VeloU since the beginning, even being the first athlete to undergo the mandatory VeloU evaluation, which sets the foundation for every athlete's personalized training plan. For Ben, signing with the University of Virginia is the realization of a lifelong dream.

"Signing with the University of Virginia means everything to me. Being able to sign at such a profound baseball and academic institution has been one of my main goals throughout my whole life," says Ben. "At the college level, I mostly look forward to being able to compete with the team and play with and against top-tier baseball players. I also look forward to being able to learn from the well-experienced UVA coaching staff."

Ben Schulman's Evaluation in 2020

Ben credits VeloU for providing the structure and guidance that helped him grow both as an athlete and as a person. "VeloU has greatly contributed to my athletic development... The entire coaching staff has been there to help guide me through my athletic journey. One lesson I will be taking with me that I learned while training at VeloU is the importance of a structured program. This consists of daily lifting, throwing, mobility, and arm care."

When reflecting on his journey, Ben is quick to mention his father, who has been his pillar of support. "My dad has supported me the most on my path to becoming a college athlete. Throughout every step, whether it was youth ball or high school, he has been there to support and help guide me."

To high school athletes aiming to play at the next level, Ben has one important piece of advice: "Don’t let the time in the offseason go to waste. This time period is extremely important for every high school athlete to reflect on what they need to improve on most and begin to work."

Justice Dejong - Duke University

Hybrid Athlete for 4 Years, Top MLB Draft Prospect

Justice Dejong is one of the most highly regarded prospects in the country, and his commitment to Duke University is just one chapter in his exciting baseball career. With a demanding schedule and an eye on the MLB Draft, Justice’s path to Duke has been shaped by discipline and a deep understanding of his craft.

"Signing with Duke means the world to me. It’s an honor to say that I am going to attend my dream school," Justice shares. "At Duke, I am looking forward to becoming a part of the blue-collar program and learning the Duke culture. I also look forward to developing as a player and playing at a higher level."

For Justice, time management has been one of his biggest challenges, but it’s also a key to his success. "Being able to manage a 1:30 hour bus ride back and forth from school every day, lifting, throwing, hitting, running, and doing my homework... Every single second of the day matters and can be put to use in a certain way."

VeloU has been instrumental in Justice's development, particularly in improving his pitching. "VeloU has been a big variable to my success, maturity, and achievements. They’ve helped develop me not only as a pitcher but as an athlete. Through their program, I have gained more velocity than I could ever imagine, and I believe I am a more polished pitcher with the ability to throw strikes."

His parents have been his constant source of support. "While neither of them have played baseball, they have always supported my journey and path. They provide me with transportation, food, and any advice and love I could ever need."

Justice’s advice for high school athletes is simple: "Take advantage of every moment. Every opportunity and second you have is important. Work as hard as you can because you cannot get the time back that you waste."

Hudson Cavallo – West Virginia University

On-Site Athlete for about 4 years

For Hudson Cavallo, signing with West Virginia means stepping up to a higher level of competition. "The coaches there are really good and care a lot about the program they’re building," he shares. "I’m most excited about the high-level competition I’ll be facing."

One of the biggest obstacles Hudson has overcome is Tommy John surgery. "It was mentally and physically challenging," he recalls. "I worked through it by relying on God and the people who believed in me."

Hudson credits VeloU with transforming his baseball path. "They took me from an okay travel player to someone who could commit to Division I baseball," he says. "They’re responsible for what I’ve been able to do on the field." Hudson also points to his Cooperstown tournament experience as a standout moment. "By far the most fun week I’ve ever had playing baseball."

Hudson’s advice for aspiring athletes is simple: "Be consistent in everything you do, whether it's eating, working out, or sleeping. Consistency is key."

Miles Blake – Northeastern University

Remote Athlete for about a year

For Miles Blake, signing with Northeastern was a dream come true. "It was huge," he shares. "Something I always wanted to work toward was playing college baseball and hopefully professionally one day." What excites him the most about college baseball? "I’m looking forward to building relationships and growing as a player," Miles says.

Along the way, Miles faced challenges like finding balance in his life. "It took a lot of time to find a schedule that worked between work, baseball, and school," he admits. "And nutrition—making sure I eat well to perform—was a big thing that took trial and error." Miles is still refining his approach, but he's proud of his progress.

VeloU has helped Miles stay on track. "They push me to work hard every day and teach me new things," he says. "Coach Sam always helps me be a better player with feedback on drills." One achievement that stands out for Miles is making Varsity as a freshman, which he says "really drove me to continue to hang with the older guys."

When it comes to advice for high school athletes, Miles emphasizes enjoying the grind. "It takes a lot of work, but once you see results, it really gets you going."

Jackson Shepelsky – Lehigh University

On-Site Athlete on his 4th year

For Jackson Shepelsky, signing with Lehigh University is the realization of a long-held dream. “Signing to Lehigh has been a dream come true for me,” he shares. “I see people sign every year, and now I finally got that opportunity—I’ve never been more grateful.” As he steps into college baseball, Jackson is especially excited to compete at a high level and give his all in every game.

Jackson credits his time at VeloU as instrumental in shaping him as an athlete. “VeloU has helped me become who I am today—from strength and pitching to nutrition,” he explains, adding that the coaches and community have driven him to constantly improve. “Every athlete inside pushes each other to become better, which is one of my favorite parts about VeloU.” Alongside his coaches, Jackson’s mom has been a powerful source of support, and he attributes much of his hard work and dedication to her influence.

Reflecting on his journey, Jackson recalls the day he committed as a defining moment. “It was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had because it was the thing I’d been working towards my whole life,” he says. To younger athletes hoping to play at the next level, Jackson’s advice is simple but profound: “Keep working and don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results right away. Results take time, so keep pushing and working as hard as possible.”

Dylan Henshaw – Stony Brook University

On-Site Athlete on his 4th year

For Dylan Henshaw, committing to Stony Brook represents the culmination of years of hard work. "It feels like all the effort I’ve put into baseball has finally paid off," Dylan says. "I’m super excited to take my game to the next level." What excites him most about college baseball? "I’m looking forward to being part of a team where everyone is driven and talented, pushing me to get better."

Recovering from Tommy John surgery was one of Dylan’s biggest challenges. "There were times I wasn’t sure I’d get back to where I was before," he admits. "But I kept working through the pain and trusted the process." It wasn’t easy, but Dylan’s patience paid off.

VeloU has played a key role in Dylan’s growth, helping him develop both physically and mentally. "I’ve learned how important it is to show up every day and train with purpose," he says. "I’ll carry that mindset with me moving forward."

One of Dylan’s proudest moments was making the varsity team as a freshman and helping his team win a state championship. "It boosted my confidence and showed me I could compete at a high level," he recalls.

As he prepares for his next chapter, Dylan’s goal is to refine his pitching mechanics, increase his control, and eventually pursue a professional career. "I want to stay healthy and keep pushing myself to reach new levels," he says.

Zak Whitney – Dayton University

Remote Athlete for 2 Years

For Zak Whitney, committing to Dayton University is a dream come true. "I’ve always told myself I’d play baseball as long as I could, and now I get to compete at the next level," he says. Zak’s dedication to the game has paid off, and he’s ready to prove himself at Dayton.

One of Zak’s biggest challenges was gaining weight to match up with other prospects. "Coaches said I was too skinny, but I kept working to get stronger," he recalls. "It wasn’t easy, but it’s been worth it."

VeloU has been a key part of Zak’s growth. "I’ve learned that consistency in training and arm care is crucial," he says. "Doing the work that others won’t is what sets you apart."

Hitting 90 mph for the first time was a major milestone. "It showed me what I could really accomplish," Zak says. He credits his mom and grandma for their unwavering support. "My mom always believed in me, and my grandma’s success in sports inspired me."

Zak’s advice to high school players? "Eat, train, and stay open-minded. Always be ready to improve." He also encourages athletes to get a free VeloU evaluation to see how a custom program can help them succeed.

Looking ahead, Zak aims to be an all-conference pitcher at Dayton, start as a freshman, and reach 195 lbs. "I want to keep improving and be more consistent on the mound," he says.

George Handal – Rice University

On-Site Athlete for 2 Years, Now Training Remotely

For George Handal, signing with Rice University is the realization of his baseball dreams. "It means everything I’ve worked for," he says. "I’m excited to compete at the highest level and show what I’m capable of."

Growing up in Honduras presented its own challenges. "It was tough with limited resources and safety issues, but I pushed through," George recalls. His faith and resilience helped him overcome those early obstacles.

VeloU has been vital to George’s development, especially in refining his mechanics. "The coaches helped me correct my flaws and gain strength while avoiding injuries," he says. Consistency has been key. "I’ve learned that it’s all about showing up and doing the work every day."

Throwing a no-hitter with 18 strikeouts was a career highlight. "It was a turning point that showed I could compete at a high level."

George’s family has always been his support system. "They’ve made huge sacrifices to help me chase my dream," he says. Their belief in him fuels his drive.

His advice to aspiring high school players: "Find coaches who help you work smart, and surround yourself with hard-working people." VeloU provided that environment for George.

As he heads to Rice, George’s goal is to dominate and eventually get drafted. "I want to compete with the best and reach the highest level," he says.

Nick Gilpin – St. John’s University

Hybrid Athlete for 2 Years – Pitcher & Infielder

For Nick Gilpin, signing with St. John’s University is the next step in his baseball journey. "It’s an exciting opportunity to be part of a winning program," Nick says. "I’m looking forward to competing at the highest level and making an impact on a team that’s already great." He’s ready to take his game to the next level, joining a team with a strong tradition of success.

Overcoming the physical challenges of being smaller than most players was one of Nick’s biggest obstacles. "I always had to prove myself," he admits. "I didn’t have the same size or strength as others, so I had to work harder and rely on my speed, skills, and mentality." Despite these hurdles, Nick pushed forward with determination, refusing to let his size limit his potential.

VeloU has been crucial in helping Nick develop his overall game. "The coaches focused on both my strengths and weaknesses, ensuring I became a more complete player," he says. "I’ve learned how to train smarter, not just harder, and that’s made a huge difference in my game." His progress is a direct result of the tailored approach VeloU provides, helping him sharpen his skills and become a more well-rounded athlete.

One of Nick’s proudest achievements is his ability to handle adversity and continue improving. "Every time I faced a setback, I learned something new and got better," he recalls. "Being part of the VeloU process has shown me that consistency is key to making real progress."

Looking ahead, Nick’s goal is to continue growing as a player and help St. John’s reach new heights. "I want to be a key contributor and help my team win," he says. "Ultimately, I’m focused on improving my skills and keeping my development on track for the next level."

Andrew Kapica - Fordham University

On-Site Athlete for 5 Months

Though relatively new to the VeloU community, Andrew Kapica has already made a significant impact in his short time with us. Committing to Fordham University, Andrew exemplifies the power of hard work, consistency, and dedication.

“I’m very excited to attend Fordham University. My goal has always been to pair high academics with Division 1 baseball, and I feel that I accomplished my goals by choosing Fordham University.”

One of Andrew's standout memories comes from his high school days, where he pitched a complete game shutout in a regional state playoff game, leading his team to its best finish in program history. "This win brought Somers Varsity the furthest in program history," he says proudly.

Andrew attributes much of his success to his family, particularly his older brother. "My earliest baseball memories are sitting in the dugout, watching him compete. We have always supported each other."

For high school athletes looking to make it to the next level, Andrew’s advice is to remain consistent and never take your skill level for granted. "Be consistent. Work hard. Don’t take your skill level for granted."

George Katsaros – Sacred Heart University

On-Site & Remote Athlete for Past 3 Years

Signing with Sacred Heart University is deeply meaningful for George Katsaros, symbolizing both his achievements and resilience. “From all the challenges I’ve faced, signing makes it all the more rewarding,” he reflects. Among those challenges was a significant setback when an injury forced him to stop throwing last fall—the first time he’d ever had to take a complete break. “Having good voices at VeloU to guide me through it was a huge help,” he says, crediting his coaches for their consistent support during recovery.

Training at VeloU has instilled in George a powerful work ethic. “You realize that working hard is not something that should be congratulated—it’s something expected from players who want to be great,” he shares. This lesson, he explains, has influenced his life beyond baseball. His dedication earned him the Section 1 Class B Pitcher of the Year, an achievement he values greatly. “A lot of people wrote me off when I was younger. To show myself that I could do it—it’s a feeling like no other.”

George’s dad has been his biggest inspiration, setting high expectations for him from a young age. “He’s always pushed me to be the best I can be, even on days when I didn’t want to,” George explains. Looking forward, he hopes to keep growing as a player and never leave anything behind. To younger athletes, his advice is clear: “Never feel like you’ve left anything out there. Give it your all, even when it’s hard—that’s what separates greatness.”

Jack Reyes – Holy Cross

Remote Athlete for 2 Years

Committing to Holy Cross means the world to Jack Reyes. "It’s always been my dream to play Division 1 baseball, and now it’s happening," he says. "I can’t wait to compete against the best and play in the College World Series."

Jack’s biggest challenge was his size, but he overcame it by joining VeloU. "With VeloU’s help, I made huge strides athletically and in my velocity," he says. "By getting stronger and learning to use my body better, I’ve reached a new level."

VeloU has been crucial in Jack’s development. "The workouts, especially eccentric lifts and explosive supersets, made a big difference for me," he says. "They helped me become a much better pitcher."

One of Jack’s proudest moments was helping his high school team win their league title. "We turned the team around and broke the school’s win record," he recalls. "It felt great to contribute to that success."

Jack’s grandfather has been a constant source of inspiration. "He’s been there since day one, and I’ve always wanted to make him proud," Jack says.

His advice to younger athletes is to enjoy the process. "Have fun with it. Play the game you love, and the results will follow."

Working with VeloU has made a huge impact on Jack’s development. "Coach Sam helped me go from a small guy throwing in the low 80s to a stronger, more athletic pitcher in the high 80s," he says.

Jack’s goal is to compete in the CWS Regional and be the best version of himself, both as a pitcher and a teammate. "I want to help win games and be part of something special," he says.

Kevin Rusinak – Quinnipiac University

Remote Athlete for 2 Years

Signing with Quinnipiac is a dream come true for Kevin Rusinak. "It’s been my goal since I was 14 to play Division 1 baseball," he says. "I’m excited to make an impact on the program right away."

Kevin’s biggest challenge has been dealing with injuries. "It taught me a lot about prevention and staying consistent, even when I didn’t feel like it," he says. "The work always pays off in the end."

VeloU has played a crucial role in Kevin’s development. "It gave me a clear path for my training and helped me develop into a better player," he says. "Everything I’ve learned will stay with me forever."

One of Kevin’s standout achievements was committing to play D1 baseball at Quinnipiac. "It was a huge moment for me," he says.

Kevin credits his family, friends, coaches, and the VeloU team for their support along the way. "They’ve all been there for me," he says.

His advice for younger athletes is simple: "Keep working, even when it seems like you’re not making progress. Stay focused, and your possibilities are endless."

VeloU has helped Kevin gain a better understanding of baseball training and become a stronger, more complete player. "I’m definitely a different player than I was before working with VeloU," he says.

As he steps into his next chapter, Kevin’s goal is to get drafted and be a weekday starter for Quinnipiac. "I want to put in the work every day to make that a reality," he says.

Alec Murray – Fordham University

Remote Athlete for 4 Months

Signing with Fordham University is a big milestone for Alec Murray. "It shows that all the hard work wasn’t for nothing," he says. "I’m excited to compete at a higher level and share the same passion for the game with teammates who have the same drive."

Alec faced challenges with consistency in his velocity and performance. "There were ups and downs, but I always told myself to keep my head down and trust the process," he recalls. "Eventually, it all came together."

VeloU taught Alec to approach every aspect of his training with a plan. "Whether it’s throwing, lifting, or arm care, I never have to guess what to do," he says. "That mindset will be key at the collegiate level."

A standout memory from high school was throwing six strong innings to help his team beat a rival they hadn’t beaten in five years. "It was a game we’ll never forget," Alec says.

His parents have been his biggest supporters, with his dad always there to help, no matter the circumstances. "They’ve been there for me every step of the way," Alec says.

His advice to younger athletes? "Give 100% every day. That way, you’ll never wonder if you reached your full potential." Alec has also appreciated working with Coach Byrns, who has helped him improve his mechanics and deepen his understanding of the throw.

In conclusion, the stories of these athletes highlight the transformative power of hard work, perseverance, and the right support system. From overcoming injuries to refining their skills, each athlete has used their time with VeloU to not only improve physically but also develop the mental toughness needed to succeed at the collegiate level. Their journeys serve as a testament to the dedication and discipline required to achieve big dreams, and we look forward to seeing them continue to thrive as they take their talents to the next level.
