Adonys Guzman Drafted by The Pittsburgh Pirates After Standout Season at Arizona

When Adonys Guzman first walked into VeloU as a high school senior, he didn’t need fixing. He needed a plan.

He already had the physical tools. Big arm. Clean actions. Strong presence behind the plate. Our job was to help him sharpen it all — to build the structure around his talent and give him the right kind of training to stay healthy, get stronger, and stay on the field.

We started with the throwing. That meant improving his sequencing and timing, helping him become more athletic and adjustable behind the plate. From there, it was about keeping his body durable over the long haul — building a strength program built around the demands of high-level catching and the volume that comes with it. Arm care was a priority too — specifically targeting shoulder and lat strength to support his throwing volume and keep his arm fresh.

None of it was about reinventing him. It was just about putting more fuel behind what already worked.

Arizona Breakout

Adonys started his college career at Boston College before transferring to Arizona, where everything clicked.

In 2025, he started 61 games and hit .328 with 12 doubles, 9 home runs, and 44 RBIs. He struck out just 32 times and walked 27 — all while managing a loaded pitching staff and showing off one of the best arms in the PAC-12.

He made it hard to run. He handled velo. He caught every big moment behind the plate — and did it like he belonged there.

Draft Day

Adonys getting drafted is no surprise to anyone in our building. The guy shows up, competes, and does things the right way — every day.

He’s earned everything that’s coming to him. And for the athletes training here now — this is what the standard looks like.
